Sales Tax Exemption

Sales Tax Exemption

What Does Sales Tax Exemption Mean?

Sales tax exemption allows eligible businesses and organizations to purchase products without being charged state sales tax. Flexpress is required by law to collect sales tax on orders shipping to certain states.

Flexpress charges sales tax on orders shipping to the following states:
Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, District of Columbia, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.

If the shipping state is not listed above, sales tax will not be charged.

Sales tax is based on the state to which your order ships, not the state where your business is located.

  • Example: If your business is in Virginia but your order ships to Arizona, Arizona sales tax applies.

Who Qualifies for Sales Tax Exemption?

Eligibility varies by state, but common exempt organizations and businesses include:

Each state determines what types of organizations qualify, so check your state’s Department of Revenue website for specific guidelines.

Reselling Printed Products

If you are purchasing from Flexpress to resell our printed products:

  • You must provide a valid resale certificate from the state where the order will ship.

  • This ensures you are not double-charged sales tax when you later resell the product and charge tax to your own customer.

Products Eligible for Exemption

Taxability varies by state:

  • In most states, all printed products are taxable.

  • Some states have exceptions (for example, clothing in Minnesota is not taxed).

  • Always confirm with your state’s Department of Revenue whether your order type qualifies.

How to Certify Your Sales Tax Exemption with Flexpress

  1. Visit your state’s Department of Revenue website to obtain the proper exemption or resale certificate.

  2. Complete the certificate with your business or organization information.

  3. Submit your completed certificate to Flexpress using our [Tax Exemption Form].

  4. Once approved, we will mark your account as tax-exempt for the applicable state.

Important Notes

  • Income tax exemption paperwork, IRS 501(c)(3) letters, or business licenses cannot be used in place of a state-issued resale or exemption certificate.

  • The certificate must match the shipping state of your order.

    • Example: If you ship to California, a California resale or exemption certificate must be on file.

  • The certificate must be in the name of the organization or business purchasing from Flexpress, not in your customer’s name.

  • Flexpress is unable to retroactively remove tax without a valid certificate on file.
